DRAFT EMAIL TO THE PREMIER - premier@sa.gov.au Dear Premier I am writing to urge you to stop and reverse your Government's several attacks on the Adelaide Park Lands. In your Government's first year in office, you authorised six attacks on the National Heritage-listed Adelaide Park Lands. Your Government is constructing or has plans to construct: * a new $98 million, eight-storey wing of the Botanic High School; * an $82 million Aquatic Centre; * a $3 billion Women's and Children's Hospital, and associated eight-storey car park; and * new stables and offices for the SA Police Mounted Unit on eight hectares of biodiversity-rich Golden Wattle Park / Mirnu Wirra (Park 21W). For each proposed construction, the Adelaide Park Lands will be targeted, wholly or partly. Can you imagine the outcry in New York City if authorities there decided to locate a high school, an aquatic centre, a hospital, a car park and police barracks within Central Park? It wouldn’t ever be contemplated. Why is the State Government refusing to consider brownfield sites for these proposed massive developments? The world-unique Adelaide Park Lands represent only 0.2% of the Adelaide metropolitan area. Adelaide already has one of the lowest ratios of green space to population among Australia's capital cities. To quote your colleague, the Member for Adelaide, Lucy Hood: "Open, green, space is literally green gold. Now is the time for us to stand up for the people whose voices are not necessarily the loudest. That is, our next generation; our children, our grandchildren, and our great-grandchildren. Because they will inherit the consequences of the decisions that we make, today. Our natural and built heritage is so important. It tells the story of who we were. But how we value and protect that heritage speaks volumes about who we want to be." In its first year in office, the Malinauskas Labor Government has authorised six attacks on the National Heritage-listed Adelaide Park Lands. The State Government is planning to construct: * a new $98 million, eight-storey wing of the Botanic High School; * an $82 million Aquatic Centre; * a $3 billion Women's and Children's Hospital, and associated eight-storey car park; and * new stables and offices for the SA Police Mounted Unit on eight hectares of biodiversity-rich Golden Wattle Park / Mirnu Wirra (Park 21W). The world-unique Adelaide Park Lands represent only 0.2% of the Adelaide metropolitan area. Adelaide already has one of the lowest ratios of green space to population among Australia's capital cities. Please support a Parliamentary Select Committee into the ongoing attacks on the National Heritage-listed Adelaide Park Lands. I would hope that such an inquiry would be supported by a majority of Legislative Councillors. To quote the Member for Adelaide, Lucy Hood: "Open, green, space is literally green gold. The State Government is planning to construct: * a new $98 million, eight-storey wing of the Botanic High School; * an $82 million Aquatic Centre; * a $3 billion Women's and Children's Hospital, and associated eight-storey car park; and * new stables and offices for the SA Police Mounted Unit. The world-unique Adelaide Park Lands represent only 0.2% of the Adelaide metropolitan area. Adelaide already has one of the lowest ratios of green space to population among Australia's capital cities. Please use your powers to protect this National Heritage Asset and intervene to prevent further damage to the Adelaide Park Lands. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ DRAFT EMAIL TO NATIONAL PARK CITY FOUNDATION IN LONDON to: hello@nationalparkcity.org Dear National Park City Foundation When the Foundation named Adelaide a National Park City in 2021, you said that assigning this status to Adelaide would create “higher expectations” for protection of Adelaide's world-unique Park Lands, that garland this city. However that has not proved to be the case. A new State Government, elected in March 2022, has downgraded the status of the Adelaide Park Lands by threatening them with several very large new developments. The South Australian Government is planning to (or has already commenced to) construct: * a new $98 million, eight-storey wing of the Botanic High School; * an $82 million Aquatic Centre; * a $3 billion Women's and Children's Hospital, and associated eight-storey car park; and * new stables and offices for the SA Police Mounted Unit on an eight-hectare patch of restored native vegetation . The South Australian State Government is refusing to consider brownfield sites for any of these proposed massive developments. The world-unique Adelaide Park Lands represent only 0.2% of the Adelaide metropolitan area. Adelaide already has one of the lowest ratios of green space to population among Australia's capital cities. Please use your discretion to immediately review Adelaide's status as a National Park City, and advise the South Australian Government that this status may be in jeopardy due to its proposals for the Adelaide Park Lands.
