There was no guest speaker booked for the AGM, because the Committee anticipated (correctly, as it turned out) that members would have required sufficient time to debate the substantive issue of whether to change the name of the Association.

HOW WE GOT HERE - BACKGROUND TO PROPOSED NAME CHANGE

On 10 November 2020 an APPA Special General Meeting unanimously resolved that the Committee “obtain professional assistance on a re-branding strategy, including a potential new name for the Association, and a potential new logo; and … to bring its recommendations on re-branding, logo designs, and naming of the Association, to the 2021 Annual General Meeting, along with any consequential recommendation to change the Constitution.”

In December 2020 the Committee endorsed a Strategic Plan 2021-24 to grow support for the Park Lands by appealing to a wider cross-section of the population.  The Committee considered it was important for this Association to engage not only with people who perceive "preservation" as necessary, but also with many others who would be willing to explore Park Lands, inspire others by sharing photos or creating artworks, campaign to protect Park Lands, and/or "restore"  i.e. volunteer to help clean up or re-green parts of the Park Lands.

Accordingly, the Strategic Plan endorsed by the Committee has defined four streams of activities during the period 2021-24. Pending professional branding advice, these activities have been tentatively labelled in the Strategic Plan as:

The Strategic Plan set targets to gradually increase activities in each of these streams, and grow revenue, subscribers, volunteers and membership. The Strategic Plan calls for ongoing and gradually increasing activities in each stream, to raise awareness of and support for the Park Lands in the broader community, thereby strengthening our influence over Park Lands policy, and support for our easily-understood Park Lands standard of "Open, Green, Public".

After adopting this Strategic Plan, and after taking branding advice from two different consultants, the Committee considered the pros and cons of a range of 10 potential names for the Association.

All of the potential names were considered in the context of the Strategic Plan and the potential of any name to contribute towards raising Park Lands awareness and support amongst the wider community. See the table of 10 options that the Committee considered, at this link:

After debating these 10 options, the Committee resolved unanimously in January 2021 to recommend to this AGM that the name "Adelaide Park Lands Association" be adopted.

At the same Committee meeting, branding consultants "Detour Design" were contracted (through principal, Abra Remphrey, pictured) in January 2021.

Abra and her team worked from January to April 2021 to develop a branding message, suite of logo designs and associated resources for the Association.

Detour Design undertook research among our supporters, and focus groups, including young people recruited for the purpose.

On 9 March 2021 the Committee received and endorsed Detour Design’s "design brief". On 6 April, before the scheduled AGM, the Committee received and accepted Detour Design’s recommended designs and branding concepts. The Committee’s decision was then presented to the AGM on 18 April.

The recommended branding message was “Love Your Park Lands” and the new logo designs reflect both “love” and the Park Lands

The same design outline with colour and texture variations can be used for each of the four activity streams:

The designs were unveiled at the AGM on 18 April, informing debate about the proposed name change.
