Concert Hall

Premier Steven Marshall has been provided with two rival designs for a concert hall that might be built on what’s left of the Open space on Festival Plaza, overlapping Elder Park in your Tarntanya Wama (Park 26)

Premier Steven Marshall has signalled "in-principle" support for the idea of a concert hall, although no funding has been provided, nor any location specified.

This is the proposed site plan for Mr Maron’s design. Much of the proposed Concert Hall would be located above (over the top of) and in-between the Festival Centre and the Dunstan Playhouse, Mr Maron advises that it would overlap Elder Park by about 100 square metres

Mr Maron’s proposed concert hall is a bold, circular design, with a seating capacity of 1,500 - far more than the 900 who can currently be seated for concerts in the Adelaide Town Hall. The proposed new venue is being suggested as a home for the Adelaide Symphony and Adelaide Youth orchestras, and act as a hub for music education in the state.

The proposal is being pushed by architect Guy Maron for whom this is a personal project. He was not commissioned to produce the design.

The Premier has also received an alternative proposal, submitted by Cox Architects, on behalf of their clients Mott McDonald for a concert hall that would have a far greater footprint on Park 26.

Neither the State Government, nor the City Council has (so far) offered any funding for either of these proposals.

However it is expected that one of these designs would be adopted and funded if the State Government goes ahead with is proposals to re-zone this part of the Park Lands for new buildings.

The death of 1,000 cuts

Repeated Park Lands losses were once characterised as like "mice nibbling away at cheese".   However recent attacks seem more like a debaucherous feast with participants devouring whatever is available, while it lasts.

The rate of Park Lands loss seems set to ratchet up exponentially unless the public can be alerted to save what's really precious and priceless.

There are many other sites within Adelaide Park Lands that are under imminent threat, or current attack.

If you think Adelaide can do better than this, then TAKE ACTION!
