Community for Creatures

by Jacqui Hunter

As one of the member organisations of the ‘Places you Love Alliance’, the Adelaide Park Lands Association was invited to host a ‘Communities for Creatures’ event during a week of action to lobby the Federal Government for tougher laws to protect nature.

The Government is in the process of drafting new legislation associated with reforming the national environment laws.

All member organisations of the Places you Love Alliance want these laws to be proactive to protect the environment and also have significant powers independent of the government.

On Sunday 5th November 60 members of the community got together in Mary Lee Park (Park 27B) to share their passion for protecting the environment.

We decorated a large banner of endangered species and also created a model of a ‘Biodiverse-City’, with approximately 50 clay models of endangered species, complete with their habitat.

Following this event, a small delegation presented the banner to Steve Georganas MP (Member for Adelaide) along with a model of a Painted Button Quail - an endangered species from the Mt Lofty Ranges.

More events and actions will be planned for the future, so please get involved to help make stronger laws to protect your environment, and be part of a ‘community for creatures’.
