Three citizen science opportunities

There are three opportunities in coming days to be a citizen scientist, recording biodiversity and/or measuring plant growth in your Adelaide Park Lands.

All observations of biodiversity in your Park Lands assist the Adelaide Park Lands Association, and others, to advocate for protection. All that you need, to participate, is a smartphone.

  1. Aussie Bird Count

The “Aussie Bird Count” is under way from 20–26 October.

Count birds anywhere, anytime — in your backyard, balcony, park, or schoolyard. Count as often as you like!

This is a great opportunity to get out into the Adelaide Park Lands, especially Possum Park/Pirltawardli (Park 1) where bird habitat is threatened by the planned golf course redevelopment.

Every count helps — with 1 in 6 Aussie birds under threat, your 20-minute count contributes to a national snapshot of birdlife.

2. The Great Southern Bioblitz

The annual “Great Southern Bioblitz” is being run from  October 24th to 27th. It’s an opportunity for all Southern Hemisphere countries to record organisms during Spring and showcase our beautiful biodiversity to the world. The event is run by a grassroots network of keen citizen scientists from across the globe.

3. Monitoring a Park Lands “pocket forest”

Third, the ‘Green Pakapakanthi’ group is holding a different citizen science opportunity on the morning of Sunday 2 November.

Volunteers are needed to help to compare plant growth and other biodiversity markers around newly-planted forests near the wetlands in Victoria Park /Pakapakanthi (Park 16). Registration is essential.
