Protecting Possum Park Trees

by Shane Sody

On National Tree Day, Sunday 27 July, a team of volunteers came together in your Park Lands to highlight just a few of the many trees at risk from State Government bulldozers and chainsaws.

It was a cold and windy day but the volunteers of the Possum Park Protection Platoon achieved their aim of tagging just some of the iconic and majestic trees among the 9,000 that line the fairways at the North Adelaide Golf courses within Possum Park / Pirltawardli (Park 1 of your Adelaide Park Lands).

Premier, Peter Malinauskas, is determined to unleash, soon, bulldozers and chainsaws to transform this Park into an elite-level “championship” golf course. Until he chooses to release his plans, no-one knows which of these trees will die, and which ones will survive.

But there is no doubt that the death toll will be high. International golf course designer Peter Dalkeith Scott (a supporter of LIV golf) estimates 60% of the Park’s trees would need to be removed.

The Premier has made it clear that he’s prepared to sacrifice as many trees as would be required to achieve his elite-level golf course, with associated new buildings and car parks, at a cost to taxpayers in the tens of millions of dollars.

The leaflets placed on these few trees, on National Tree Day, highlight the Premier’s push to “Pillage Your Park for Millionaire FIFOs”.

You too can help Protect Possum Park and its thousands of trees:
