State Election 2026 - Question #1

Awareness

We advised each party that your Adelaide Park Lands are unique in the world and have National Heritage status, yet many people, even in Adelaide, seem unaware of their rarity.

We asked: “If elected, what, if anything, should the SA Government do to address this?” Here’s what each party replied:

Animal Justice PartySA Government tourism marketing could place more emphasis on the Adelaide Park Lands as an attraction in and of itself, rather than just something surrounding the CBD and North Adelaide. The environmental benefits of green belts and biodiversity in the parks could be highlighted as part of marketing campaigns too. Additionally, the SA Government could allocate funds to improve signage in the parks. Better signage could make the parks more attractive, point visitors towards attractions in the parks, and highlight the rarity of the Adelaide Park Lands.Good suggestions. Ideas for signage would be potential City Council opportunities rather than State Government.8
Tammy Franks teamA promotional programme would ensure that South Australians understand the uniqueness of our Park Lands. A Park Lands visitors centre (built adjacent not on the Park Lands!) could provide fantastic opportunities for school children, locals and tourists alike to learn more about the history of the Park Lands, find out about the importance of the area traditionally to Kaurna people and to develop an appreciation of the importance of the Park Lands to the life of the people of Adelaide and South Australia. Excellent suggestion, that would of course need a suitable ongoing budget for publicity9
Craig Pickering, independent for Legislative CouncilThe State Government spends millions promoting tourism in our state, yet does next to nothing to promote the Parklands. These same Parklands are a key reason we are often voted in the top ten liveable cities in the world, and a promotional campaign making all South Australians aware of this is essential in enhancing their recognition, use and protection.Excellent suggestion10
GreensThe Greens will continue to pursue State Heritage Listing and World Heritage recognition to cement the importance of protecting the Adelaide Park Lands for future generations. Such acknowledgements would not only elevate the Park Lands’ profile but solidify their status as one of South Australia’s defining icons. Strengthening public awareness and appreciation of the Adelaide Park Lands will require a renewed commitment to their care and protection as a South Australian icon. Targeted investment in maintaining open green space, expanding tree canopy, and supporting comprehensive revegetation programs would deliver visible, immediate benefits for residents and visitors to the Adelaide Park Lands.Good, although these suggested actions concern specific issues in Park management and protection rather than promotion.7
