State Election 2026 - Question #6 (for bonus points)
Return to Open Green Public?
We invited each political party to nominate any site or sites for re-greening, rehabilitation, or restoration to “Open Green Public.” Here’s what each Party replied:
| Party | Party Response | APA evaluation | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tammy Franks team - independent for Legislative Council | First, I would take a long-term view, through change of legislation. A change to legislation that ensures the return to open green public Park Lands at the end of the life of existing developments is a critical way of ensuring that this argument does not need to be prosecuted every time a development reaches the end of its life. Second, with an eye to what can be achieved in the immediate future, we should look to restore Victoria Park to high quality green open and public space by removing the infrastructure that currently allows for major events such as motor sport fo not only alienate the Park Lands from South Australians for a good proportion of the year, but also sees the area returned to South Australians in a much degraded form after each such event. | Two excellent suggestions | 10 |
| Animal Justice Party | Removal of car parks on Rundle Road, at least on the north side, and consequently an expansion of Rundle Park. Given the prevalence of events in Rundle Park, enlargement would improve the success of events held in the park. Overhead power lines are still extensive in the Adelaide Park Lands, so undergrounding of power lines will also serve as an improvement. | An imaginative, though relatively minor proposal | 6 |
| Greens | The Greens are strongly opposed to office towers being placed on Festival Plaza and would advocate returning this area to Park Lands so that can be open, green space enjoyed by the whole community | One welcome proposal | 8 |
| Liberal Party | The party's written response did not address this question. | 0 | |
| SA Labor | A re-elected State Labor Government will continue to work with key stakeholders to invest in key aspects of the Adelaide Parklands. | No sites identified | 0 |

| Craig Pickering, independent for Legislative Council | Possum Park could be rejuvenated instead of being made into a driving range for a 3-day event. The Festival Plaza issue is also on Parklands and should be made into a public space with emphasis on greenery and community. | One welcome proposal | 8 |
