Stop the Chop rally, 28 Feb

by Shane Sody

A rally on Saturday 28 February might be your last opportunity to prevent irreversible losses within a massive 90 hectares of your Adelaide Park Lands.

BOOK for the rally HERE:

It’s free to book for the rally, but you can donate to the Adelaide Park Lands Association when you book. Donations will be used to publicise the rally more widely, by printing and distributing leaflets and with social media “boosts”.

Why rally on Feb 28?

The Premier, Peter Malinauskas, has made clear his intentions to attack the urban forest of Possum Park / Pirltawardli (Park 1 of your Adelaide Park Lands) - home to three golf courses - to inflict:

  • the loss of 585 trees (though he won’t reveal which ones);

  • new commercial buildings to generate million dollar revenue streams; and

  • months of fencing and grandstand construction disrupting your Park access multiple times every year.

The Premier has not followed through on a promise that he made in March 2025, of “extensive consultation” on his plans.

Rather, he and his Ministers have refused to identify any of the doomed 585 trees, nor the areas that would be set aside for car parking, maintenance sheds, a new clubhouse, nor storage sites for all of the temporary viewing stands that would be regularly unpacked and deployed within this urban forested Park / golf course.

All of this (and more) was approved by a law, rushed through State Parliament in June 2025, with no public consultation.

The State Government’s record on your Park Lands over recent months gives little room for optimism that the biodiversity and serenity of this Park would be protected.

Therefore, in February 2026, “people power” remains as the only hope left for this part of your Park Lands.

Whether or not the Premier follows through with his plans after the State election on 21 March will depend, in part, on the extent of community pushback NOW, before the chainsaws move in.

Will you stand by, to allow the massive deforestation that the Premier has planned? Or will you stand with us, to defy the would-be plunderers, those who see the trees in your Park Lands merely as obstacles to money-making?

I hope to greet you on Saturday 28 February. We are planning a surprise for the would-be plunderers.

Habitat trees like this one, take decades to grow. The Government is not promising anything more than three tiny seedlings to replace each destroyed mature tree.
