Path upgrade works continue

by Shane Sody

After two months, work to upgrade the shared use path along the River Torrens / Karrawirra Pari in Helen Mayo Park (Park 27) is still some way off completion.

The path along the southern side of the River Torrens / Karrawirra Pari is a very popular cycling/running/pedestrian route that connects the western suburbs with the city.

Back in January, City Council workers commenced what was expected to be a months-long exercise to upgrade the surface and lighting. It was not clear from the Council’s signage how much of this 900-metre length of sealed pathway would be resurfaced.

But recent work has been confined only to the eastern end of this red line, near the bridge:

The path already features lighting along its length, but a City of Adelaide spokesperson told us in January:

“The existing path and lighting have reached the end of their serviceable life and need to be replaced. The works will also upgrade the path to meet current safety and accessibility standards, including widening it to better accommodate shared use by pedestrians and cyclists.”

Signage erected by the Council in January advised that the work was scheduled for completion “in Autumn.”

Here’s what the path looked like in January before the work commenced.

Separately, another short section of the River Torrens Linear Pathway has been re-opened after a much briefer closure period, during February.

This short section leading under Port Road at the Hindmarsh Bridge has been widened and resurfaced.

Earlier, in Helen Mayo Park:

In 2024, the Council removed from Helen Mayo Park un-necessary fencing that had prevented access between the pathway and the upper portion of the Park.
