Canopy shredding

A mockup plan for a new championship golf course in Possum Park / Pirltawardli (Park 1 of your Adelaide Park Lands) has indicated a minimum canopy loss of 54% from the Park’s 9,000 trees.

The State Government is now under pressure to defend or justify its looming tree massacre, being planned to cater for a small number of multi-millionaire FIFO golfers.

What you're telling the Government

It seems that State Government ministers need a fresh reminder about how many people value and love your Park Lands.

The Possum Park Protection Platoon is stepping up advocacy and action to head off the Government’s seizure of your Park Lands for profit.

Hostile takeover

The State Government’s hasty swoop to take over a large swathe of your Park Lands has cleared the way for a loss of biodiversity and large intrusive new buildings, infrastructure and more car parks on your Open Green Public spaces.

The move defies many of the State Government’s own rules and laws; so that an upgraded golf course can downgrade your Park Lands.

Several years ago, APA received funding to produce animated videos about constant threats to your Open Green Public Park Lands. Sadly, their message still resonates in 2022. APA’s Carla Caruso checked in with the artist behind the clips, Greg Holfeld.

Why do gum trees drop branches?

Gum trees have been in the spotlight recently after a branch almost fell on children at a city aerial park. Trees For Life’s Vicki-Jo Russell says caution is needed around the trees “during periods of hot, windy or stormy weather and [amid] areas recovering from fire”.

Just how hot does it get in your Adelaide Park Lands? That depends on where you’re standing, especially whether you’re underneath a tree.

SA Labor is supporting an attack by the Marshall Liberal Government on Frome Park (in Park 11).

The Marshall Liberal State Government is prepared to go into this year's State election on a record of attacking your Open Green Public Park Lands more ruthlessly than any Government in SA's history, and the Labor Party is prepared to match their attacks..

More likely to be hit by lightning

Fears around the safety of gum trees were reignited after a large branch fell, earlier this month, on an aerial adventure course in Park 20.

However, tree advocates have called for calm, saying the circumstances were unique and you’re more likely to be hit by lightning than by a tree.

Welcome to the Car Park lands

Adelaide is the world's only City in a Park, but seems to be turning into a City in a car park.

Last month the North Adelaide Golf Club expanded hard surface car parking into Possum Park / Pirltawardli (Park 1) off Strangways Terrace, apparently without getting endorsement from the Park Lands Authority or the City Council.

Places to nest

Australia has the most hollow-dependent wildlife in the globe. But the loss of older trees, due to development, has made these hollows harder for fauna to find. It’s why the Adelaide City Council has been busy installing nesting boxes as alternative accommodation.
