Impacts on community health of the MotoGP in ...

What will the proposed MotoGP mean for community health? Margaret Brown looks beyond the economic arguments to the potential impacts of increased noise, air pollution, traffic congestion, tree loss and the disruption of green space. She argues that the health costs of bringing more motor racing into the Adelaide Park Lands deserve much greater scrutiny.

Fumes or plumes? Why not bird tourism?

As the South Australian Government pushes ahead with plans to bring MotoGP to Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi, a leading birdwatcher says the State could be overlooking another growing tourism opportunity, one that depends on protecting our natural environment rather than building racetracks through it.

Why do gum trees drop branches?

Gum trees have been in the spotlight recently after a branch almost fell on children at a city aerial park. Trees For Life’s Vicki-Jo Russell says caution is needed around the trees “during periods of hot, windy or stormy weather and [amid] areas recovering from fire”.

Temperature rising, more trees needed

Just how hot does it get in your Adelaide Park Lands? That depends on where you’re standing, especially whether you’re underneath a tree.

Labor supports Gov't attack on Frome Park

SA Labor is supporting an attack by the Marshall Liberal Government on Frome Park (in Park 11).

The Marshall Liberal State Government is prepared to go into this year's State election on a record of attacking your Open Green Public Park Lands more ruthlessly than any Government in SA's history, and the Labor Party is prepared to match their attacks..

Water your favourite tree?

An Adelaide resident has suggested ‘adopting’ public trees to water during hot weather. So, should you consider quenching not just your own thirst, but also a tree’s thirst, while visiting your Park Lands? We asked the City of Adelaide’s Horticulture Team Leader..

More likely to be hit by lightning

Fears around the safety of gum trees were reignited after a large branch fell, earlier this month, on an aerial adventure course in Park 20.

However, tree advocates have called for calm, saying the circumstances were unique and you’re more likely to be hit by lightning than by a tree.

More dog off-leash areas coming

The City Council is soon expected to adopt new rules for dog off-leash and on-leash areas within your Park Lands.

A revised dog management map allows more dog off-leash areas and simpler rules for when your dog should be on a leash.

Welcome to the Car Park lands

Adelaide is the world's only City in a Park, but seems to be turning into a City in a car park.

Last month the North Adelaide Golf Club expanded hard surface car parking into Possum Park / Pirltawardli (Park 1) off Strangways Terrace, apparently without getting endorsement from the Park Lands Authority or the City Council.

Places to nest

Australia has the most hollow-dependent wildlife in the globe. But the loss of older trees, due to development, has made these hollows harder for fauna to find. It’s why the Adelaide City Council has been busy installing nesting boxes as alternative accommodation.

Activation? Yes, but not with more concrete

The Park Lands need so-called “activation” says the deputy chair of Green Adelaide. But do Open Green Public spaces really need more concrete, bricks, fences, gates, and locked doors to restrict entry? Wannabe Park Lands developers want you to fall for the trap of ephemeral “vibrancy”
